The rest of the week progressed. Joan was still knocked out it the Hospital Wing, and Lorelai wasn't talking to Hermione, or anyone at all for that matter. She usually talked politely to the Weasley twins and their friend Lee Jordan, but even now she was keeping to herself. It seemed that Hermione demanding to know about Lorelai and Malfoy had upset Lorelai enough that she wasn’t talking to anyone.
She still sat with the group at breakfast however, and Harry looked up nervously, seeing Snape approaching them. He set a note down beside Lorelai and she put down her porridge spoon, picking up the note and reading it, as Snape proceeded out of the Great Hall.
“Oh no.” Lorelai said, her voice sounding like she had just been told that she must live on a diet of Dragon Dung as punishment for the fist fight.
“What?” Harry asked. He was the only one she hadn’t avoided all week, though she didn’t exactly seek him out either.
“I have to go to potions today.” Lorelai said, folding the note again and putting it in her bag.
“Why?” Harry asked.
“You know that potion we started on the first day of class?” Lorelai asked, looking nearly green, “We're drinking it today, and since I started it, I have to participate.”
“Oh no!” Hermione cried, looking over at the Slytherin table. “Today?” Lorelai nodded grimly.
“I don’t know if anyone’s been taking care of my potion, but I don’t want to be partnered with anyone else.” Lorelai looked positively horrible. She pushed her breakfast away from her and stood up. “I’m going to the dungeons to talk to Snape, see if I really have to.” And she hurried out of the Great Hall.
She rushed down into the dungeons, jogging almost, and came into the Potions Dungeon before Snape had even reached his desk.
“Professor Snape?” Lorelai asked, catching her breath as he sat down. Lorelai noticed two dressing rooms at the front of the class.
“Yes, Ms. Black?” he asked, sounding annoyed with her already.
“I was wondering if perhaps-”
“You must participate in today’s activities. You were still enrolled in my class when we begun this potion.” He said, standing and going towards a large, empty chalkboard that had all the ingredients and instructions for the potion they had been working on all month.
“But sir, I really don’t like the idea of taking a Polyjuice Potion that I haven’t made myself.” He turned, only looking mildly surprised at her.
“You’ve made a Polyjuice Potion before?” he asked, looking as though he knew she must have, but pretending to be surprised anyway. He looked at her for a moment, as if evaluating her, then turned back to the board, writing ‘Polyjuice Potion’ largely over the list of ingredients.
“It’s just that,” Lorelai was against it for many reasons, “Sir, you know what can happen if powdered bicorn horn is used improperly, or added out of order-”
“Which is why I have checked every potion, and have selected only the correct potions for use.” Snape said.
Lorelai was angered by this, and said quickly and indignantly, “Then I want to be partnered with whoever made the best.” She said. Snape looked over his shoulder at her, looking her over one more time as if summing her up as a person, then she swore she almost saw him smirk.
“Very well. You have my word.” And he set down the chalk, just as the first Slytherins started to pour in from Breakfast. Lorelai grumbled under her breath and started towards her seat. She took her seat, just as the first few students began to talk after reading the board.
Malfoy stepped in, reading the chalk board as he made his way down, but as soon as he reached the stairs, he saw Lorelai sitting at a table grumpily.
“Well hello.” He said with a smirk. His black eyes were nearly completely faded, though his lip was still split, since it had been re-injured Tuesday morning during their fight.
“Go away.” Lorelai said lowly.
“I thought you were too good for this class.” He said, stopping menacingly in front of her table.
“I have to be here today.” She said, looking up at him abhorrently.
He smirked and began to laugh wickedly, “You have to drink it with the rest of us.” He said, still laughing, “Don’t worry, I’m not looking forward to losing my…” he glanced down at Lorelai’s chest, “Endowments either.” He said with a smirk..
“Malfoy.” Harry said gruffly, he had snuck up behind him, and Malfoy jumped slightly. Lorelai smirked at this. “You’re standing in front of my seat.” Harry said, looking at Malfoy as if he were something unpleasant on the bottom of his shoe.
Malfoy glared first at Harry, then Lorelai, then took his seat.
“Alright.” Snape said, sweeping to the front of the class. “As you see, the potions you have been brewing since the start of term have been Polyjuice Potions. Today, I will pair you off and you will use them. In the hour in which you spend as someone else, you may do your homework. Nothing else.” He said.
“Now, I’ve put the potion in glasses. I’ll partner you up, then the first two will go first.” His eyes started roaming around the room. “We will have to make a few changes, considering the absences…” he said, glancing at Joan and Neville’s seats.
“Now then, Finnigan and Thomas, Brown and Patil, Crabbe and Goyle, Potter and Weasley,” Harry and Ron looked at each other, too surprised that Snape hadn’t split them up as usual to notice that Snape had paired all but four Slytherins.
Lorelai was waiting for her name to be called with Hermione’s, but when she heard Snape partner Pansy Parkinson with Blaise Zabini, she had to turn around to look at the expression on Malfoy’s face when he realized he’d be spending the next hour as Millicent Bulstrode.
But before she could relish in it, Snape said, “Granger with Bulstrode and Malfoy with Black.”
The entire room was silent.
“Oh, you have got to be kidding me!” Draco shouted. Lorelai had never heard him shout before, and Harry had never heard him talk back to or disagree with Snape before.
“Well,” Snape said, his voice low, “If you’d rather pair with Potter…” he said, and Lorelai nodded fervently, but Malfoy sneered and so it stayed that way.
“What?” Lorelai asked, “You aren’t serious?”
“You said you wanted to be partnered with the best potion.” Snape said, raising an eyebrow triumphantly and turning towards the front of the class. “Now, you two first, to the front of the class.”
Lorelai and Draco both stood, moving towards the front of the class, glaring at each other loathingly. “Now,” Snape began to explain, “You will proceed into the dressing booths I’ve placed in front. Go inside, draw the curtain, and exchange your clothing, as it won’t fit after you’ve taken the Polyjuice Potion.”
They were both silent, but neither stepped into the changing booth, and both just stared at him. “Even underwear?” Lorelai asked. The rest of the students laughed, though Draco didn’t find it nearly as amusing.
“No, not underwear, Black.” Snape spat. He motioned towards the dressing booths, and they each stepped into one, casting each other one last hateful glare before going in and drawing the curtain.
Lorelai began working on the buttons of her shirt, after she peeled off her sweater and school robe. Malfoy tossed his robe over the top of the stalls, and his tie and sweater soon followed.
Lorelai draped hers over as well, and he pulled them quickly into his booth. She reached up, turning to face the back, in case the curtain was drawn for some reason, and removed her bra, knowing she could not wear it once she looked like Draco, but positive she would not give it to Draco to wear.
She began to pull on his clothes, “Ech! I’m gonna smell like you now.” She said, though she knew perfectly well that he knew she liked the smell of him. She had told him on a regular basis when they were younger.
To her surprise, he didn’t say anything, so she continued to get dressed, pulling on his pants and zipping them up.
“Uh, I think you forgot something…” Draco said, his hand over the top of the stall.
“I am not giving you my bra!” she said indignantly.
“Professor,” Draco started to complain.
“She doesn’t have to Draco.” Snape said sternly. Lorelai pulled on Draco’s school robe, with a large silver snake on the chest, and looked down at her feet.
“I need your shoes and socks, Draco.” She said, peeling off her own. Wordlessly, he took hers and passed over his own. Lorelai left the tie off, not wanting to bother with it. She stepped out of the booth, feeling her cheeks turning red in front of the class. Snape was standing there, holding two beakers with the potion in it. Lorelai picked a single, white blonde hair off the shoulder of Draco’s robes, and took the potion in her hand. She pushed up the baggy sleeves of Draco’s uniform.
“Mr. Malfoy…” Snape prompted.
“I am not coming out in a skirt.” Draco said sternly. Lorelai would normally have laughed, but under the circumstances she couldn’t even force herself to.
“But you need a hair from Ms. Black.” Snape said. Malfoy reached out, grabbing a handful of Lorelai’s hair and pulling tightly.
“Ow!” Lorelai protested, feeling a couple of her hairs come out of her scalp.
“Got one.” He said lazily. Snape handed the beaker to Malfoy through the curtain.
Lorelai stepped back into the dressing room, drawing the curtain once again.
“Now add the hairs.” Snape said, “And show them to the class.” He added as the sound of the potions hissing and smoking made most of the class flinch. Lorelai waved her hand in front of her face, clearing away some of the smoke and then put the beaker outside the curtain, to show the class. Hers had turned a dark black, and she could see through the slight opening that the beaker Draco was holding had turned a mint green.
“Now, drink them.” Snape said. Lorelai looked at it for a moment, then plugged her nose, and drank as much of the potion as she could choke down. She wasn’t exactly looking forward to the Polyjuice sensation again. The beaker tumbled from her hand and shattered on the floor as her skin began to bubble and her stomach lurched.
She watched her fingers elongate, getting paler and a little more square. Last time, she had turned into another girl for an hour, so the change wasn’t as unpleasant, feeling certain areas changing especially.
In less than a minute, it was over, and she stepped out of the curtain. She now filled the pants Draco had traded her for, as well as the shiny, black shoes. She had the shirt and sweater sleeves pushed halfway up her very different forearms, and had neglected the tie, so she had the collar wide and open, exposing her now, very long neck. She reached up, brushing her blonde hair out of her face, as it was not slicked back.
“That was horrible.” She heard her own voice say, though it was drawling and spiteful.
“Shut up, Draco.” Lorelai answered, though it was Malfoy’s voice that answered, and she was surprised at the way her throat vibrated when she spoke, she wasn’t used to it. Though she definitely did not like that when she used his voice, it was full of just as much disdain as his own.
Draco threw back the curtains and stepped out, Lorelai’s knee high socks on, her gray uniform skirt rolled up, her Gryffindor school robe open, and her white blouse barely buttoned. Lorelai did not like seeing herself braless, especially presented in such a manner. But Draco didn’t notice the look of contempt on her face, but was too busy looking at himself.
“Damn, I look good!” he said, looking himself up and down. Lorelai rolled her eyes and crossed Draco’s long arms in front of her, going towards her desk. Harry was looking at her with wide eyes as she scooped up her books, thinking she wore that scowl a little too much like Draco did.
Draco, though he looked like Lorelai was strutting back to his desk, Lorelai’s sweater and tie clenched in his hands. He sat down, his legs spread out like they normally were, despite the fact that he was now in a girl’s body.
Ron and Harry were next, though not as reluctant, and they changed clothes quickly. Lorelai watched, as a minute later, they stepped out, both looking down at themselves as the other, Ron wearing his smirk on Harry’s face.
Nearly half an hour had passed, and Lavender and Parvati had just stepped out after they had taken the potion, both giggling madly as they returned to their seats. Lorelai had been doing her homework, and though she was in Draco’s body at the moment, she still had her own handwriting.
Movement caught her eye, however, and she looked over to see Draco, sitting up straight on his stool, looking down at his chest, and grabbing his new breasts repeatedly.
“What are you doing?” Lorelai spat, again, nearly scaring herself at how much she sounded like the real Draco.
“I thought so,” he laughed. It was interesting to see that his eyes were still slightly blackened, and his lip still split, even if it was Lorelai’s face now. He grabbed her breasts again roughly, squeezing them and smiling widely, “They have gotten bigger over the summer!”
Lorelai narrowed her eyes, and hit him roughly on the arm, but he didn’t stop. She glared at him for a minute more, though he continued to grab himself, a smile on his face.
Not knowing what else to do, and since she figured Draco’s body wouldn’t fit inside her underwear, had removed it and stuffed it into her bag when she came out of the booth, hoping no one saw, she leaned back, arching her back and pulling up the waist band of Draco’s pants, looking down at her new self, though she was somewhat aware of the difference.
“Oh.” She said, and then sat back down, her eyes just a little bit wider than they were before. “Well, that explains a lot.” She said, staring straight in front of her.
Draco was staring at her. “A little more than you expected?” he asked, a wide, knowing smile on her face, his blue eyes lighting up smugly.
“Well, I had always figured you were either compensating for a lack of something, or…” she paused, grabbing a book out of her bag. Draco wasn’t used to seeing a shocked, nervous expression on his face.
“Or what?” he asked with a large smile.
“Advertising.” She said quietly, Draco’s voice coming out low and raspy. He began to laugh loudly, Draco’s laugh, though it sounded vocally like Lorelai. Lorelai opened the book, pretending too look down at it, though her mind wasn’t on her homework.
“Black,” Draco said, “That book’s upside down.” He chuckled. Lorelai turned it right side up, and leaned forward trying to concentrate on her homework.
Draco pulled Lorelai’s shirt out, looking down it with a contented smile.
Lorelai hit him on the arm again, “Knock it off!”
After dinner the rest of the Gryffindors stayed in the common room. Lavender and Parvati climbed the stairs to the dormitory.
"Lorelai, it's time for you to go down to the detention." Parvati said as they entered the room.
"Avada Kedavra!" Lorelai shouted, then another spell that Lavender and Parvati had never heard before, they looked at each other slightly scared.
"Really? Already?" Lorelai said, pulling her curtains open, and Lavender and Parvati saw dead spiders all over the top of her bed, as well as many rolls of notes, and a large jar of live spiders.
"Thanks." Lorelai said, tucking her wand in a pocket, and closing her curtains again, looking very flustered.
She pushed past Parvati and Lavender, and went down the stairs. Ron and Hermione were waiting for her in the common room, with Harry standing next to them. Ron's lip was no longer swollen, but still split, and Hermione's black eye was fading quickly.
"Shall we go, then?" Lorelai asked, speaking to them for the first time since Tuesday, but looking very flustered anyway. Ron nodded and started towards the portrait hole.
"At least I won't be burping up slugs this time." He said.
They arrived in the trophy room, Malfoy and Morrigana entered from the opposite door at the same time. Filch and Mrs. Norris were standing in the middle of the room.
"Shine all of the trophies and plaques, no magic." Filch spat, but there was a tone of amusement in his voice. "Malfoy and Black start over there," He said pointing, "Weasley and Damian over there," Filch said, pointing to the other side, "And Granger start in the middle."
Lorelai and Ron looked at each other, both nervously, and Hermione started towards the middle, grabbing a rag from the table Filch was standing near. Malfoy and Morrigana smirked, walking proudly towards their sides of the room.
"Just like old times, right Black?" Malfoy said, as they scrubbed trophies. He used one hand, grabbing her robes and starting to lift them. Lorelai hit his arm.
"Knock it off, Draco." Lorelai said. He smiled to himself, grabbing another trophy from a shelf.
"Ah, Tom Riddle." Draco said smugly and loudly. Ron dropped the trophy he was polishing, and Morrigana laughed out loud.
"Death eater." Lorelai muttered under her breath.
"Ass kisser." Draco muttered back, gingerly polishing the plague.
"Brownnoser."
"Muggle-lover."
"Hypocrite."
"Mudblood." Draco said, looking Lorelai in the eyes and whispering it. There was another loud clatter of a dropped trophy and a yelp of pain.
"Sorry, lost my grip." Lorelai said lazily, picking the trophy up daintily as Malfoy hopped around, holding his foot.
Around midnight, the three Gryffindors returned to the common room, arms and feet aching. Joan and Harry were sitting on the couch closest to the fire.
"Joan!" Lorelai cried, running over and hugging her as she stood up. "You're awake!"
"Yep." Joan laughed, hugging Hermione and Ron all at once. "Madame Pomfrey got me up during potions, and just let me comeback right after your detention started."
"Alright, tell us." Hermione said, grabbing Lorelai's shoulder.
"Tell us what?" Joan asked, bewildered.
"What's going on between her and Malfoy." Ron said, folding his arms defiantly.
"Malfoy!?" Fred asked from a dark corner. He and George had been sitting there together, quietly for a change.
Lorelai looked around at all of their expecting faces. "Fine." She said reluctantly, turning towards the fire.
"Draco and I... we used to be a couple. Kind of. "Lorelai admitted after a pause.
"What! Ew!" Joan said from the couch, sitting next to Harry.
"Malfoy?" Fred asked again from his corner.
"I met him at the Quidditch World Cup. And we talked and stayed with each other for most of the day. And then, right before the game, he kissed me." Lorelai said, staring at the fire.
"Malfoy?" Fred asked again, his voice getting more and more desperate.
"And then this summer, while I was in Washington DC, I was staying at The Crossing. It's a big Wizarding Hotel in DC." Lorelai explained, "I was staying there, because Dumbledore was coming to pick me up, and I had to talk to the Head of the American Wizarding Congress about my mom."
"What, did she snog his dad?" Ron asked, sounding somewhat angry. Lorelai looked at him with hurt eyes, tears behind them.
"Her mum is dead, Ron!" Harry shouted, almost angry as well. Ron looked at Harry surprised, then at Lorelai.
"I-I'm sorry." Ron stuttered.
"She's dead?" Hermione asked, aghast.
"She was murdered." Lorelai said. "And they left the Dark Mark over her." She said, staring almost absent mindedly at the fire. "I had to meet Dumbledore at the Pentagon, where the Wizarding offices are."
"America knows about the wizards?" Harry asked.
"And the aliens." Joan added, everyone looked at her strangely. They all stared at her silently for a moment before Lorelai continued.
"Anyway, I was staying at The Crossing, and who should be in the hotel at the same time, but Draco Malfoy." Lorelai sighed, "And he was the only person I knew, and we spent two days together, telling each other about everything. I told him about my uncle, he told me about his great grandmother. She was a squib." Lorelai laughed, "And he ended up staying the night in the hotel room with me."
"Malfoy?" Fred croaked.
"We didn't do anything, he just fell asleep there, so I didn’t wake him." Lorelai said, "But we did make out. I don't know if you guys use that muggle term..."
"They do." Joan said, looking at Harry out of the corner of her eye.
"So that's why he teases you?" Hermione said, "That's nothing!"
"No, we might have done something else, but we were in his hotel room, and his dad stormed in all angry because... well, um... his hands weren't in very appropriate places." Lorelai blushed heavily, but there looked to be anger in her eyes. "And then I saw it on his arm, the Dark Mark."
"On Malfoy's?" Ron asked eagerly.
"No, on his dad's. And I scrambled out, scared out of my mind. And then Draco and I had this huge fight in the lobby of the hotel, and I ended up with a huge snake wrapped around my ankles, and he was out on the floor with Purple Ringlets in his hair." Lorelai said, they all looked at her strangely, "I said the hex backwards on accident." She shrugged.
"You kissed Malfoy?" Fred was still surprised. Lorelai looked at him, her eyes sad.
"He's not the only boy I've kissed." She said, a scolding tone in her voice, as it was pretty obvious to anyone that hadn’t been living under a rock that Fred Weasley had a crush on her. "He was just the one mistake."
"But why would you want to do anything like that with...Malfoy?" Ron said, looking like he would vomit if he had to think of it.
"I don't know. My mom had just died, and I was just being really stupid." Lorelai said.
"Why was she murdered?" Hermione asked, "Do you know?"
"I suppose it's because she and I were working on the Avada Kedavra counter-course." Lorelai said.
"You were what?" Joan nearly jumped off the couch. "There is no counter curse for it!"
"That's why we were trying to find one." Lorelai said. "But nothing's happened yet." Lorelai looked down at the fire again, "Is that a good enough explanation for ya'll?" Lorelai asked. They all nodded, dazed, as Lorelai turned embarrassingly to go up the stairs.
